Faial Adventure

It’s a trail that can hardly be compared with others, as it’s more technical, meaning we’ll have to use our hands to support ourselves during the descent, pass under trees and bushes, and enter crevices covered in nature’s greenery. Apart from the driest times of the year, we’ll have to get our feet wet to reach the center of the Crater where the temporary lagoon is located, so we can enjoy the superb 360º view of the Caldera. To climb back up, the challenge is not only physical but also mental. It seems like an endless natural staircase where the heart starts beating faster and the layers of clothing start to shrink.

The descent to Caldeira do Faial is a challenging and demanding route, but at the end of the day the happiness of having been there will outweigh any muscle pain.

Taking a full-day tour around the island means experiencing the daily lives of the local people. You’ll get a general idea of how the islanders live, what they eat, what they do, and when. All this while passing by the island’s most iconic sites. These places tell us about more natural aspects such as the ecology and diversity of the species that live here, the geological features that have influenced the island’s landscapes, and the history that has been traveled to get to what Faial is today. Don’t think that this tour is just for tourists, as the Faialenses themselves are in the habit of going “around the island” on what we call a Sunday stroll.
